As part of its goal of recycling 50 percent of game day waste this year and making Neyland Stadium a “zero waste” facility by next year, UT Recycling is urging fans to take advantage of and participate in their many recycling initiatives.
To aid this effort, recycling/trash stations have been placed throughout tailgate areas on campus. Each station will include a recycling dumpster and a trash dumpster for nonrecyclable materials.
Tailgaters are asked to do their part to keep Tennessee beautiful by using all recycling and trash stations in and around the stadium.
In addition, recycling containers have been placed inside the stadium. These containers are single-stream, which means that fans can dump all of their recyclable materials in one place without having to sort them. These include paper items such as newspapers, programs, playbooks and popcorn boxes; aluminum and steel cans; plastic bottles, cups, jugs and wraps; glass bottles and jars; and cardboard pizza and takeout boxes.
Other game day efforts include composting food scraps and donating usable food to people in need throughout the community.
Neyland Stadium has eliminated Styrofoam and condiment packets, and also sells commemorative plastic cups that include one free refill and can be taken home or recycled at the stadium.
In 2012, more than 10,000 pounds of food was donated to local charities, and more than 10,000 pounds of food was composted by UT Recycling with the finished product then being used on campus.
