KNOXVILLE—Although construction is now under way on a new Student Union at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, restaurants and stores are still open for business inside the Carolyn P. Brown University Center.

Earlier this month, demolition of the University Center parking garage began. It is the first step in the construction of a new Student Union.

Because of the work, the second-floor entrance from the UC Plaza, next to the Shiloh Room, and the ground-floor bookstore entrance from the parking garage are now closed. University Center visitors can still enter the building from the ground-floor entrance to Rocky Top Café from Philip Fulmer Way, the second-floor entrance from Cumberland Avenue, and the ground-floor side entrance into Smokey’s from Volunteer Boulevard.

While visitors may need to take detours to enter the UC, once inside they’ll find things are still the same.

To remind the campus community of all the University Center amenities, Volunteer Dining, University Center Management, and the Department of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management (HRT) will co-host a “construction fair” from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on March 28, outside the Cumberland Avenue entrance of the UC.

Attendees will be invited to enjoy free food, drinks, and giveaway items from a variety of entities, including Volunteer Dining, HRT, Verizon Wireless, UCopy, Student Life, UC Management, the UT Police Department, and the United Residence Halls Council.

Representatives from these groups will answer questions about how recent construction changes will affect University Center operations.

“We want students to know that none of the services inside the UC are going away, and everything will still have the same hours of operation,” said Samantha Wentworth, Volunteer Dining’s director of retail marketing.

Fair-goers also will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win the grand prize: a Rockstar snowboard donated by Pepsi. Other prizes will include T-shirts and coupons.
