KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A University of Tennessee-Knoxville associate professor in botany has won a national award for nature photography.
Dr. Alan Heilman won first prize in the 1996 Natural World Photographic Competition of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, for his photograph “Sunflower.”
Dr. Edward Schilling, head of UT-Knoxville’s botany department, said Heilman has been a top finisher for several years.
“Dr. Heilman’s expertise in natural photography has formed the basis for his graduate level course in botanical photography, has resulted in numerous workshops and presentations to the general public, and has benefited our freshman level course with excellent illustrative material,” Schilling said.
“This most recent award provides another tangible example of the expertise that makes our program in botany so special.’
Heilman’s photograph will be displayed Oct. 19-Jan. 5, as part of the Natural World Exhibit at Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
