KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Lisa Ann Stone of Sevierville has been awarded the first Philander P. Claxton Medal at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
The award honors the U.S. Commissioner of Education under Presidents William Taft and Woodrow Wilson. It will be given to a student graduating with an arts and science degree who plans to enroll in UT-Knoxville’s graduate education program and then teach in a Tennessee public school.
Stone received the bachelor’s degree from UT-Knoxville May 10 and will enter graduate school this fall. She won the “Outstanding Senior in Spanish” award this spring.
The education building at UT-Knoxville bears Claxton’s name, and he is known for organizing the Summer School of the South, a regional program for public school teachers held in the early part of the century at UT. Claxton, an 1882 UT graduate, also was president of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.
Stone is married to Jamie Stone and they have two daughters.
