sports betting

Legal sports betting in Tennessee went live November 1, as allowed by the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act. The act allows anyone 21 years of age or older who is physically located in Tennessee to place a wager in the manner authorized by the act. It is illegal, however, for any UT student or employee who has access to material nonpublic information concerning a student–athlete or team that could be relevant to the outcome of a sporting event to use that information to place a wager on a collegiate sporting event. The act also provides that it is a crime for any person or entity “directly or indirectly, to knowingly receive, supply, broadcast, display, or otherwise transmit material non-public information for the purpose of wagering on a sporting event or influencing another person’s or entity’s wager on a sporting event.” Even with the new law, the NCAA prohibits sports wagering by student–athletes and athletics department employees.
