Looking for the perfect study abroad program? Programs Abroad will host the Programs Abroad Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, in the Student Union Pilot Flying J Ballroom. At the event, you can learn about opportunities to study, research, intern, or participate in service-learning abroad.
To make the most of the fair, check out these tips from Programs Abroad:
Before the Fair
Identify your goal for studying abroad: Do you need to fulfill a specific degree requirement while abroad? Looking to improve your foreign language skills? Is your interest in gaining a professional experience? Pinpointing your goal will help you recognize the best opportunity.
Meet with your academic advisor: Academic advisors can help determine which courses are best to take abroad and help you make a plan that best supports your academic goals.
Research UT’s approved programs and deadlines: Explore the Programs Abroad website for an overview of approved programs. Review application processes, required documents, and upcoming deadlines.
During the Fair
Talk to people: Talking to program representatives is the best way to learn more about study abroad opportunities. Representatives from faculty-directed programs as well as affiliate, exchange, and direct partners will be present to answer questions and provide additional information. Need special accommodations while abroad? Interested in diversity abroad? All these questions and more can be answered by having a conversation with a program provider. Study abroad alumni also will be present to share their personal experiences.
Explore all your options: Depending on your academic, financial, or personal goals, some programs may be better for you than others. Compare the difference between research, service–learning, and internship-based programs. Keep an open mind throughout the process.
Take materials: Pick up catalogs, brochures, or flyers about the programs you are interested in to reference later or to show to family and friends who may be helping you make a decision.
Sign up for more information: Leave your contact information with any of the program representatives so you can be contacted about upcoming deadlines and info sessions.
Have some fun: Take photos at the selfie booth, enter to win giveaways, and pick up free swag from study abroad providers!
After the Fair
Ask follow-up questions: If you have questions after the fair, stop by the Center for Global Engagement in Melrose Hall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to speak with a peer advisor or call 865-974-3177 to schedule an appointment. You can email general questions to volsabroad@utk.edu.
Set a timeline: Meet with a programs abroad coordinator to review application requirements, deadlines, and funding opportunities. Use deadlines to map out next steps. Plan ahead, especially if you need to apply for important documents such as a passport or a visa.
Use online resources: Search approved program options using the program search feature on the Programs Abroad website. Explore funding opportunities and access diversity abroad resources.
Stay in touch: Be sure to follow Programs Abroad on social media. Follow the center on Instagram at @utkprogramsabroad, on Twitter at @UTKAbroad, and on Facebook by searching University of Tennessee Programs Abroad, @utkprograms.abroad.
