Forbes magazine has ranked the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, among the top 10 employers in Tennessee, according to its first-ever ranking of America’s employers by state.

UT placed eighth among all businesses in Tennessee and is the top university on the list. Vanderbilt ranked 12th and the University of Memphis ranked 31st.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by Forbes as a top employer for the state of Tennessee,” said Chris Cimino, senior vice chancellor for finance and administration. “For our more than 10,000 employees, it reaffirms what we all know—the university is a great place to work.”

Publix, Costco, and the UT Medical Center topped the list of the state’s best employers. The list was based on the results of an independent survey of more than 80,000 US employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in their US operations.

Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to conduct the survey. Participants were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employer to friends and family, and to evaluate other employers in the same industry.

The Tennessee Valley Authority was ranked fourth in the list. First Horizon National, the Memphis-based holding company for First Tennessee Bank, was ranked fifth. East Tennessee Children’s Hospital ranked sixth and Memphis-based FedEx ranked seventh.

Rounding out the top 10 was Johnson City Medical Center at ninth and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis at 10th place.

Other Knoxville-based employers to make the list included Covenant Health and Knox County Schools.
