The university is preparing for the fall semester and the beginning of classes on Wednesday, August 17. We are planning to welcome approximately 7,100 new and returning students to our residence halls next week.
Our campus construction and the City of Knoxville’s upgrades to Cumberland Avenue will present some challenges to those traveling to campus.
Cumberland Avenue is open but reduced to one lane in each direction between Twenty-Second Street and Sixteenth Street. We recommend accessing campus by taking Neyland Drive to either Joe Johnson Drive or Lake Loudoun Boulevard. Andy Holt Avenue and surrounding streets should be avoided if at all possible during move-in days.
Volunteer Boulevard is closed from Pat Head Summitt Street to Todd Helton Drive as part of a streetscape improvement project. It will reopen Friday, August 12. Until the road reopens, westbound traffic on Volunteer Boulevard must turn left or right onto Pat Head Summitt Street.
The new Volunteer Boulevard garage opens Monday, August 8, for commuter and staff parking. The garage has more than a thousand spaces and will be equipped with smart technology. Until the Stokely Family Residence Hall is complete, the only entrance and exit is on Pat Head Summitt Street near Volunteer Boulevard.
The move-in schedule and traffic changes for each day are as follows:
Monday, August 8: First-year residents participating in the Ignite Serves and Ignite Knox programs move into their residence halls from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
