David Benjamin, founding principal of architecture firm The Living, will lecture at UT’s College of Architecture and Design at 5:30 p.m. Monday, February 29.
The lecture will be held in the Art and Architecture Building’s McCarty Auditorium. The lecture is free, open to the public, offers continuing education credits, and will be streamed live.
Benjamin’s lecture, “Adaptation,” explores the architecture of the future, bringing new technologies to life in the built environment and integrating design innovation, sustainability, and the public realm. Benjamin will convey his belief that cities and buildings are living, breathing organisms and that within the context of rapid change and new urban challenges—design should also be a living, breathing organism.
Benjamin is an associate professor of architecture at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He has won many design prizes, including the Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League, the New Practices Award from the American Institute of Architects, the Young Architects Program Award from the Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Architizer Special Achievement Award in Technology and a Holcim Sustainability Award.
Benjamin’s work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the ESpace Foundation in Paris, the ACADIA in Calgary, the New Museum in New York, the Nevada Museum of Art, the New York Academy of Sciences and the TED Conference. His work is also part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art.
In 2015, Benjamin’s firm was ranked third by Fast Company in its list of the world’s ten most innovative architecture firms.
