The Department of Religious Studies is launching a lecture series to help foster a greater understanding of Islam in East Tennessee, the Siddiqi Lecture in Islamic Studies. The first speaker will be Sherman A. Jackson, a professor of religion and American studies at the University of Southern California, who will speak on “Converging Limits: Shari’ah and the U.S. Constitution.”
The event will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28 in the Cox Auditorium in Alumni Memorial Building. It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
UT’s Siddiqi Lecture in Islamic Studies was developed to bring top Islamic studies scholars to campus in order to foster a greater understanding of Islam in East Tennessee.
Professor Sherman A. Jackson is the King Faisal Chair in Islamic Thought and Culture, as well as a professor of religion, professor of American studies and ethnicity; and director of the Center for Islamic Thought, Culture and Practice at the University of Southern California. He will discuss misconceptions of Islamic law and how the US Constitution limits religious traditions.
