Facilities Services has cordoned off large sections of the Humanities Plaza, as structural engineers evaluate what repairs need to be made to McClung Tower.
Workers discovered Monday that a large section of concrete had separated from the bottom of McClung Tower’s second floor, on the west side of the building. The large concrete section, which was once bolted to the building, was removed late Monday night.
A structural engineer spent several hours Tuesday evaluating what caused the concrete to separate from the building. The assessment determined that the settling of the brick on the twelve-story building had forced the concrete border to break.
The brick and concrete need to be repaired as soon as possible but building use remains unchanged. The structural evaluation determined that the same problem likely exists on all four corners of the building. There are, however, no overarching structural problems with the building, the underground parking garage, or the concrete bordered roofline.
