KNOXVILLE—Jeffrey Becker, Chancellor’s Professor and head of the department of microbiology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has been named a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Drug Discovery and Mechanisms of Antimicrobial Resistance Study Section, Center for Scientific Review.
His term began July 1 and will run through June 30, 2015. As a member, Becker will review grant applications submitted to the NIH concerned with the identification of novel antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiparasitic agents for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and the study of the evolution, mechanisms, and transmission of resistance. He will make recommendations on the applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board and survey the status of research in their fields of science.
“As a member, Jeff is of great value to medical and allied research in our country,” said Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek. “His duty and service requires mature judgment and objectivity as well as a major commitment of time and energy.”
Becker was selected through a peer-review process on the basis of his demonstrated competence and achievement in microbiology as evidenced by the quality of his research accomplishments, publications in science journals, and other honors. Becker has trained more than thirty doctoral students who hold faculty or staff positions at many major institutions, has published more than 240 peer-reviewed articles, and has been awarded grants for research from many national agencies.
