The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Office of Communications and Marketing’s efforts in producing the 2010 commencement featuring former Vice President Al Gore, the 2010 gubernatorial debate, various videos, and the Chancellor and Provost’s electronic newsletters have won awards in local and statewide public relations and journalism contests.
The items and the awards they won are:
• Planning and execution of the 2010 College of Arts & Sciences commencement ceremony featuring Gore won an Award of Excellence from the Volunteer Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
• Planning and execution of the gubernatorial debate, which UT Knoxville coordinated with WBIR, won a gold award from the Tennessee College Public Relations Association (TCPRA) and an Award of Quality from the PRSA Volunteer Chapter.
• The Chancellor’s newsletter, which is published every other month, and the Provost’s newsletter, which is published two or three times a year, won a TCPRA gold award and a PRSA Volunteer Chapter Award of Quality for electronic newsletters.
• “Girls Learn About the World of Transportation at Transportation Academy,” a video about an innovative summer outreach program developed and hosted yearly by the Center for Transportation Research and the Southeastern Transportation Center, with support from the College of Engineering, won an Award of Excellence for “online use of video” in the 2010 Golden Press Card Competition of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a TCPRA Silver Award, and a PRSA Volunteer Chapter Award of Merit.
• “Afghanistan Care Packages,” a video about students organizing a care package campaign for soldiers serving overseas, won a TCPRA Gold Award and a PRSA Volunteer Chapter Award of Quality.
• “Ray’s Place,” a video about the diner in South College, UT Knoxville’s oldest building, won a PRSA Volunteer Chapter Award of Excellence.
In addition, Amy Blakely, assistant director of media and internal communications at UT Knoxville, was elected vice president of TCPRA.
Blakely has worked at UT since 2005.
TCPRA membership includes at least 27 public and private colleges and universities in Tennessee.
