Beth Avery, Eric Haley and Sally McMillan of the College of Communication and Information recently published an article in the Journal of Consumer Affairs. The article explored which messages were most effective in persuading rural women to get more involved in breast health issues. The statements “I need to be around for those I love” and “If I don’t take care of myself, no one else will” were most effective at boosting health awareness and actions.

Caula Beyl, dean of the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and William Brown, dean for research and director of the University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station, are part of the newest class of the Food Systems Leadership Institute. The FSLI experience prepares scholars for upper-level leadership roles in food system programs, and to assume broader leadership responsibilities within their organizations. The two-year program is sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, with the initial funding provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Hamparsum Bozdogan of the Department of Statistics, Operations and Management Science, was invited to serve on the international advisory board of Istanbul University School of Business in Istanbul, Turkey.

Flavia Brizio of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures has been asked by the scholarly journal Arena Romanistica to join their editorial board as referee reader for articles on Italian contemporary literature. Brizio also is a member of the editorial board of the journal Studies in European Cinema.

Ramon DeGennaro of the Department of Finance has been elected to the academic board of directors of the Midwest Finance Association. The three-year term begins this month.

David Fox of the College of Architecture and Design, has been named one of only two winners of the 2010-2011 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Diversity Achievement Award, which honors efforts to achieve greater diversity in architecture curricula, school personnel, and student bodies.
