Hamparsum Bozdogan, Toby & Brenda McKenzie Professor in the Department of Statistics, Operations and Management Science, is one of the 34 invited speakers from around the world at the 5th International Biostatistics Conference in Istanbul Turkey, May 10-14. Bozdogan will speak on Computer-Aided Detection of Breast Cancer Using Probabilistic Kernel Discriminant Analysis and Information Complexity. He will also chair a session at this conference.

Chris Holmlund, a professor in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Cinema Studies Program, and six students minoring in Cinema Studies spoke at the third annual Midwest Undergraduate Film Conference hosted by Notre Dame University on April 24-25. Holmlund gave the keynote talk, on “Jackie Chan and the Art of Aging in Action.” The “Cine Vols” dominated the conference, presenting papers on both European and U.S. mainstream and avant-garde films. Topics included: “Abjection and Chora in Three Films of Roman Polanski,” “Juno Gives the Stink Eye to Maturity,” “Landscapes of Disease: Representations of AIDS and Identity in the Work of Derek Jarman,” “Through a Lens Darkly: Exploring Sven Nykvist’s Cinematography in Bergman’s Trilogy,” “Hollywood Controversy and Holocaust Revisionism in 2008,” and “From Book to Biopic: A Guide to Adaptations Hosted by Harvey Milk.”

Alaina Willet, an undergraduate student in biological sciences, has won grant funding from the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) 2009 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The goal of the SURF program is to provide opportunities for students to pursue meaningful research in plant biology early in their college years. Willet won for the project entitled “Research of Arabidopsis plant to Find New Components of ERECTA Signaling Pathway through EMS Screen for Mutants.” The award includes $3,000 in undergraduate student summer research funds, a one-year student membership to ASPB, and $575 for student travel to Plant Biology 2010 in Montreal, Canada.
