Interim Chancellor Jan SimekI hope the spring semester has started well for all of you!

Our new campus conservation policy—meant to save both energy and money—is now in full swing. The majority of buildings on campus have been switched to their new temperature set points, and the Facilities Services staff has been working to ensure that all systems are working as efficiently as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation in this vital effort. Let me take this opportunity to answer a couple of the most common questions about the new policy:

First, to clarify, the policy restricts the use of personal refrigerators, but encourages the use of departmental refrigerators.

These shared resources are permitted under the new policy.

Second, please note that faculty and staff should not make any temperature adjustments on their own, but should contact Facilities Services to do so. They can be reached by calling 974-2347, or online through http://facilities.utk.edu.

When you visit the address below, you’ll find a list of the top 11 ways you can continue to join in the Switch Your Thinking campaign. Please take the time to read these tips and share them with your coworkers. If each of us makes a point of putting these tips into practice, our campus can meet its goal of a 10 percent reduction in energy use this year—resulting not only in benefits to our environment, but also in a savings of more than $2 million.

To thank each of you for your patience and sacrifice as we make these important changes in the midst of difficult budget times, you’ll also find a coupon on the list that is good at all campus Starbucks Coffee locations. With the help of our partners in Campus Dining, this coupon hopefully will help you stay more comfortable in the midst of cooler weather.

You can find the list and the coupon here: http://www.utk.edu/news/docs/SYT-coupon.pdf

Again, thanks to each of you for all you do for the university.
