KNOXVILLE — Nineteen middle and elementary school teams from across Tennessee will compete from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Project Citizen Showcase at the Nashville Public Library.
“We the People: Project Citizen” is a national civic education program coordinated by the Center for Civic Education and the Tennessee Center for Civic Learning and Engagement with support from the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
The hands-on class project required students to identify and investigate a community problem and develop public policy to solve it.
The winning class project will be entered into the National Project Citizen Portfolio Showcase, which will be held at the annual meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures in August 2008.
A few examples from this year’s entries include:
• Retention Prevention — Cleveland Middle Schools, Cleveland, Tenn.
• Students for Study Hall — Cleveland Middle Schools, Cleveland, Tenn.
• School Uniforms — Cordova Middle School, Cordova, Tenn.
• Cyber Bullying — Laurel Elementary School, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.
• Traffic Problem: Solution Needed — Doe Elementary School, Mountain City, Tenn.
State Sen. Rosalind Kurita will give a luncheon talk, and prizes will be awarded at 12:45 p.m. in the library’s auditorium. The award ceremony is open to the public.
