KNOXVILLE –- Prospective master’s program students considering study in advertising, communication studies, journalism and electronic media, or public relations are invited to an open house at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

UT’s College of Communication and Information will host the event on Jan. 18, 2008, in UT’s Communications and University Extension Building, located on the Knoxville campus at 1345 Circle Park Drive.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the third-floor lobby of the building. The event will include program overviews, lunch with current students and faculty and a tour of facilities.

The master’s degree in communication and information is intended for students who desire careers related to a variety of communication and information fields. It also is intended for students who seek a deeper understanding of the role of communication in organizations, media and society.

Concentrations are available in advertising, communication studies, journalism and electronic media and public relations. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available.

Students with a variety of backgrounds have used the program to further their career and academic goals.

“The program has both the breadth and depth needed to serve many different types of students,” said Sally McMillan, the college’s associate dean of academic programs. “Some students use the master’s degree to hone skills in communication that they learned in bachelor’s degree programs. For other prospective students who earned an undergraduate degree in an unrelated area, the master’s degree program is a shift in focus that allows them to develop new skills.”

In addition, returning students with several years’ experience in the communication or information fields have found the master’s degree helps them to prepare for management-level careers. Many students also view the master’s degree as the first step toward a doctoral degree and an academic career.

A full schedule of events for the open house, as well as an RSVP form, can be found at http://www.cci.utk.edu/msopenhouse.
