Dr. John Petersen, in his first appointment since assuming the UT presidency July 1, has named Stuart to the post on a permanent basis. He had served as interim executive assistant since August 2003.
“I am pleased Lofton chose to become a candidate for a permanent appointment,” Petersen said. “The committee that reviewed applicants sent me a very strong list of finalists.
“The good work Lofton has done over the past year, and his vast knowledge of the university, will be a great help to the president’s office and to me.”
Stuart’s annual salary will be $120,000.
Before Dr. Joe Johnson appointed him interim executive assistant last August, Stuart was assistant vice president for alumni programs at UT. In that role, he was chief operations officer for the university’s 300,000-member National Alumni Association. He joined the alumni staff in July 1972.
A Haywood County, Tenn., native, Stuart earned the bachelor’s in agriculture from UT in Knoxville and has done graduate work in communications at UT. He received the Torchbearer award, highest honor given to a graduating senior, in 1970.
Stuart is a member of the board of trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the association of college and university alumni, philanthropy and communications professionals. He also is a long-time member of the southeast district CASE board of directors.
On campus, he has served as a First-Year Studies instructor and a member of the Long Range Planning Committee.
