KNOXVILLE — Dr. Joseph Carcello, co-founder and director of research for the University of Tennessee-s Corporate Governance Center, has been named one of the most influential people in the U.S. business world in the current issue of Business Finance Magazine.

In an article titled “2004’s Influencers: 60 You Need To Know,” the magazine lists Carcello among the leaders now shaping the U.S. accounting and financial reporting environment.
An excerpt from the article reads:
“In our increasingly complex corporate universe, a cluster of stars is helping brighten the fuzzy future. These individuals, whom we’ve designated ‘influencers,’ promise to hold sway in the coming year, when new rules and principles will become grounded in practice.
“Joseph Carcello has published numerous articles on audit committee performance, financial fraud, financial reporting and audit quality. He has also contributed research … and is regularly called on by federal regulators for his accounting, audit, governance and financial reporting insight.”

Carcello, a William B. Stokely Distinguished Scholar in the Department of Accounting and Business Law at UT, has published more than 30 articles in academic and professional journals on audit committee performance, financial fraud, and audit quality.
A study he co-authored titled “Fraudulent Financial Reporting: 1987-1997, An Analysis of U.S. Public Companies” was cited by the Wall Street Journal, Barron-s, and regional media outlets across the nation. His work has been cited in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s rules and speeches.
Carcello has served as president of the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association. He also is a member of Institutional Shareholder Services’ Academic Advisory Panel and The Institute of Internal Auditors- Board of Research Advisors.
