MURFREESBORO — University of Tennessee President John W. Shumaker’s first visit to a UT alumni meeting will be July 25 with the Rutherford County chapter.

Alumni and friends of the university will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Stones River Country Club. Shumaker, former president of the University of Louisville, became UT’s 21st chief executive in June.

Before the alumni meeting, Shumaker will meet with Murfreesboro-area students who are enrolled at UT’s campuses across the state.

A new agreement between the UT Space Institute in Tullahoma and Middle Tennessee State University is expected to be discussed at Thursday’s alumni gathering. A memorandum of understanding between the two institutions, signed July 1, will benefit students and promote research and economic development in Tennessee.

One of the first initiatives of the agreement will be the offering this fall of an MTSU computer science class, using compressed video via computer, at the Space Institute. Future plans call for students at MTSU to be able to use UTSI aircraft in aerospace courses.

The Rutherford County alumni chapter is part of the UT National Alumni Association, which has nearly 300,000 members in more than 100 chapters around the world.
