KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee College of Nursing is offering a specialization in nurse anesthesia in its master-s program this fall.
UT Nursing Dean Joan Creasia said the specialty curriculum will enroll its first class of students in August 2001.
Creasia said the program will admit eleven registered nurses who already hold bachelor’s degrees in the field and train them in the physiology, science and art of nurse anesthesia and other courses. Upon completion of the 28-month program, students will be awarded the degree of Master of Science in Nursing, she said.
Creasia said UT has had a nurse anesthesia concentration for nearly 40 years administered through UT in Memphis. UT Medical Center in Knoxville served as its primary clinical site.
The new program will be run by UT’s College of Nursing in Knoxville in order to be closer to the hospital here, she said.
“It just makes sense for the program to be in closer proximity to the hospital,” Creasia said. “Faculty, staff, and administrators of both institutions are pleased with the creation of the new program and are excited by the potential for programmatic growth and expansion.”
Creasia said the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs would accredit the program in June.
