KNOXVILLE — Freshman enrollment at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville next fall will be limited to 3,800 students, UT President J. Wade Gilley said Wednesday.
A total of 4,155 freshmen enrolled this fall, compared to 3,806 in 1998. Gilley said the limit is necessary so students can be served adequately during a period of declining resources.
“We have an obligation to serve all the students that enroll. Without increased resources we cannot provide a quality education for our students,” Gilley said.
“Because of the uncertainty of our funding situation and the need to maintain quality, we must cap enrollment now. We have no alternative,” Gilley said.
“This may cause some inconvenience for some students, but we must maintain the quality and integrity of our academic programs and student services.”
The deadline for freshman admission at Knoxville is Jan. 15, 2000, Dr. John Peters, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, said.
“Admitted students will need to confirm their intent to enroll by May 1 in order to hold a place in the fall 2000 class,” Peters said.
