KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A scholarship fund honoring retired tax counselor W. Hugh Overcash has been established at the University of Tennessee College of Law.

The $100,000 gift to the 21st Century Campaign is from Overcash and two former employers, Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Ashland Oil. It will provide two full-tuition scholarships annually for students majoring in tax law.

Overcash, of Stone Mountain, Ga., was director of corporate taxes and senior international tax counsel for Georgia-Pacific for 11 years before retiring in 1994. He previously was tax counsel for Ashland Oil for 12 years. The two firms are providing matching gifts for the fund.

“Hugh and Myra Overcash are two of the finest people we know,” said Richard S. Wirtz, dean of the UT-Knoxville College of Law.

“These scholarships will enable two students to pursue their studies in the field to which Hugh Overcash dedicated his professional life. There could be no more fitting tribute to a distinguished career in law.”

Overcash earned three degrees from UT-Knoxville — a bachelor’s in business in 1949, a law degree in 1951 and a master’s in accounting in 1952. He earned the master of laws degree in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1963.

The College of Law’s $6 million campaign is part of UT’s $250 million 21st Century Campaign. UT-Knoxville’s goal is $130 million.

Gifts to the college support centers for advocacy and entrepreneurial law, fund professorships and student scholarships, expand services of the Legal Clinic and law library, and will provide state-of-the-art educational and technological resources in the new law building, which is currently under construction.
