An opening ceremony and news conference for Odyssey of

the Mind world finals will be held at the University of Tennessee Thursday, May 23. OM is an Olympic-style, creative

problem-solving competition, sponsored by IBM.

The ceremony, with a parade of countries, begins at 9 a.m. in Thompson-Boling Arena. The news conference follows at approximately 10:45 a.m. in the arena’s Ray Mears Room. OM founder Sam Micklus, the foreign teams and Chancellor John Quinn will be available for questions at the news conference.

The international teams in the contest represent Shanghai and Chungking, China; Budapest, Hungary; Gdansk, Poland; Potsdam, Germany; and Japan, Mexico, Canada, Belgium and the Soviet Union.

Tennessee teams competing are Northside Junior High, Jackson; Science Hill High, Johnson City; Miller Perry Elementary and Colonial Heights Middle, Kingsport; Hutchison Elementary, Woodland Presbyterian and Harding Academy, Memphis; Dickson County Senior High, Dickson; Collierville Middle, Collierville; Nolensville Elementary, Brentwood; and Dover’s Creative, Dover.

Parking will be available all day Thursday in lot C-3, across from the arena, with presentation of press credentials.
