In February 2011, Chancellor Cheek challenged the campus community to work together to reduce our energy consumption. The Chancellor’s Challenge is now over, and the results are in. The campus has reduced electricity use by one-kilowatt hour per square foot over this past year. We have also saved more than $900,000 in electricity costs.
Now that the fall semester has ended, the campus has a tremendous opportunity to reduce energy consumption and utility costs. Facilities Services has set back or turned off heating and cooling systems in campus spaces that do not house research laboratories, animal care facilities, server rooms, or other temperature-sensitive operations.
With just four months left in the Chancellor’s Challenge to reduce energy consumption by 10 percent, progress on campus has taken a dramatic dip. Temperatures are rising as summer draws near, but our progress in the Switch Your Thinking Chancellor’s Challenge has taken a dip. While we are still making progress, it is not enough to meet the chancellor’s goal of reducing our campus’s energy consumption by 10 percent over twelve months.
After just two months into the Switch Your Thinking Chancellor’s Challenge, UT Knoxville faculty, staff, and students have helped to reduce the campus’s overall energy consumption by an average of 1.5 percent. In March, the campus’s consumption was down by 2.2 percent, a decrease of more than 400,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
