The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, announces the retirement of Smokey XI from official mascot duties.
Since being named to serve as the university’s beloved mascot, Smokey XI has worked hard to adapt to the energetic atmosphere of game day at Neyland Stadium. Despite the extensive efforts of his handlers, trainers, and veterinary team over the past two years, Smokey XI’s reserved temperament continues to affect his comfort in public outings.
For his well-being and happiness, Smokey XI will immediately step away from mascot responsibilities and enjoy a quiet, peaceful retirement with his pack — his brother, his dad Smokey X and the Hudson family.
The university is pursuing options for Smokey XII for next season in coordination with the Hudsons.
