On Aug. 16, more than 7,800 students gathered at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Student Union to enjoy Tennessee Saturday Night, an event hosted by the Division of Student Life that celebrates and immerses students in the Volunteer spirit.
Students enjoyed activities like glow-in-the-dark laser tag, painting, dodgeball, vision board crafting and caricature drawing while learning about the services offered by the division. A drone light show depicting UT icons like Smokey, Davy Crockett and the Rock and a fireworks display above the Student Union closed out the night.
“This is a great welcome-back opportunity for our students,” said Frank Cuevas, vice chancellor for the Division of Student Life. “New students are able to get connected with their peers, and continuing students can hang out with their friends who they haven’t seen all summer. It’s a fantastic event for building a sense of community.”
Abbey Hood, a first-year mechanical engineering student from West Grove, Pennsylvania, said she is excited to experience every aspect of life at UT.
“I’m excited for the community,” said Hood. “Everyone loves Tennessee so much, and I feel like that shows in all the great things happening on campus. I’m looking forward to football season and getting a great degree, and I’ve already met so many wonderful people.”
Silas Bryant of Clarksville, Tennessee, who is also a first-year student majoring in mechanical engineering, said she looks forward to getting to know her fellow students through the many events offered by Vol 104: Big Orange Welcome.
“I’m excited for Vol 104 and all of the activities,” said Bryant. “It gives so many chances to meet new people and do new things.”
Through a mix of celebration and connection, Tennessee Saturday Night reflects the university’s mission to unite Vols through engaging, transformational experiences that foster a vibrant and supportive campus community.
