The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is one of America’s top employers by state for 2024, according to Forbes Magazine in an announcement published Aug. 20.

“Receiving this award is an incredible honor and a testament to being a steadfast pillar within our state, serving as a vital entity that our community can rely on,” said Tarah Keeler, interim associate vice chancellor and chief human resources officer. “This recognition not only reflects our past successes but also reinforces our ongoing commitment to excellence.”

To determine the list, Forbes and Statista, a renowned statistics portal and industry ranking provider, surveyed 70,000 workers at companies with a minimum of 500 employees across all 50 states. Participants were asked to rate their employers on a variety of criteria, including working conditions, compensation packages, potential for development and overall company image.

Statista then asked respondents how likely they would be to recommend their employer to others and to nominate organizations in industries outside their own. The number of businesses ranked in each state was dependent on two factors: the number of qualifying employers and the size of the state’s workforce. UT ranked 7th out of 80 Tennessee companies on the list.

Currently UT has 2,182 faculty and 5,778 staff employees. In addition to generous health and retirement plans, the university offers employee tuition waivers and discounted tuition for qualifying employees and family members at state colleges and universities. Campus resources include a university-affiliated medical center, an early learning center for children from infancy to kindergarten, a veterinary clinic and botanical gardens.

In May UT was listed by Forbes as one of the nation’s best employers for new graduates, and in February the magazine ranked UT as one of America’s best large employers for the third consecutive year.
