Chancellor Donde Plowman visits with faculty and staff during Picnic on the Plaza at the HSS Plaza

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, earned recognition as one of America’s best places to work by Forbes magazine. UT ranked 100th of 500 in the large employers category.

“We are proud to see the hard work we have done to make our campus an enjoyable and safe place for our employees recognized at the national level,” said Mary Lucal, associate vice chancellor for human resources. “We strive to make the university a welcoming environment to anyone who studies or works here.”

Among large employers (more than 5,000 employees), UT ranked:

  • 1st among higher education institutions in the Southeastern Conference;
  • 3rd among largest employers in Tennessee;
  • 9th among public higher education institutions in the United States; and
  • 15th among educational institutions, public or private, in the United States.

Forbes partnered with Statista, a market research company, to produce its annual list. Data was collected by surveying 60,000 Americans employed by businesses with at least 1,000 employees. The list was divided into two rankings: 500 large employers and 500 midsize employers.

UT was recognized last fall by Forbes as one of Tennessee’s best employers.
