Supply Chain Program Third in the Nation and Top in the SEC
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is ranked 46th among the nation’s best public universities and 103rd nationally, according to the 2022 U.S. News and World Report undergraduate rankings released today. UT had the largest rise in rankings among comparable peers up from 52nd and 112th, respectively, in 2021.
The university’s supply chain program, in the Haslam College of Business, took the number one spot in the Southeastern Conference, and climbed two spots to achieve a number three national ranking.
UT improved in key rankings metrics such as graduation and retention, faculty resources, and student excellence.
Chancellor Donde Plowman said the university is well-positioned to continue such a positive trajectory.
“I am proud that UT continues to be ranked as the premier public university in the state and among the best in the nation. Our position is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and staff, the dedication of our amazing students, and the support of our passionate alumni,” she said. “We strive for excellence every day as part of our commitment to being the best we can be in service to the citizens of the Volunteer state.”
Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor John Zomchick echoed the chancellor’s sentiments.
“We’re incredibly proud of this year’s undergraduate rankings. Our faculty, staff, and students rose to the occasion during an incredibly challenging year and proved that our Volunteer community can achieve anything. UT is a leader in the state of Tennessee, in the country, and around the world.”
UT earned high rankings in specialty categories across business, engineering, and nursing as well:
- Haslam College of Business ranked 30th among public institutions. In addition to the aforementioned top three supply chain ranking, the college is 11th in business analytics and 28th in accounting among publics.
- College of Nursing ranked 42nd among public institutions in the report’s first-ever ranking of Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs.
- Tickle College of Engineering ranked 35th among public institutions.
- UT rose three spots to 45th among public institutions as a best college for veterans.
UT also rose in faculty resources, which account for 20 percent of an institution’s score, as the percentage of classes with 20 or fewer students is now 38 percent, up from 31 percent last year. ACT ranges increased from 24-30 to 25-31. In the overall university ranking, UT tied with 13 other institutions.

“UT’s College of Nursing is excited to be recognized for its high-quality undergraduate nursing programs,” said Victoria Niederhauser, the Sara Rosenbaum Croley Endowed Dean’s Chair for the College of Nursing. “These rankings are a direct reflection of the talented faculty members in our college who are committed to excellence in education through clinical experiences in hospitals and community settings, simulated learning in our health innovation lab, and interactive classroom experiences.”
“The Tickle College of Engineering seeks to offer a world-class education that prepares our graduates to take on the rigors and challenges of the modern world,” said Matthew Mench, dean and Wayne T. Davis Dean’s Chair of the college. “This ranking is an affirmation of the quality of our program’s offerings and the faculty and staff that lead them.”
“Being recognized as a best college for veterans reinforces UT’s dedication to and strong support for veterans and their families,” said Amber Williams, vice provost for student success. “Our desire is to bridge the gap from military service to higher education to job obtainment, and to ensure veterans’ success both in and out of the classroom.”

The information presented in the 2022 US News & World Report rankings and directory was collected during the spring and summer of 2021 via the US News annual statistical survey of more than 1,400 institutions on a variety of metrics, including student retention and graduation rates, Pell Grant recipient graduation rates, peer assessments, faculty resources, and alumni giving.
