To further expand and continue access and diversity efforts, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has announced eight new high schools are now eligible for the Flagship Scholarship. Students at 38 Tennessee high schools now qualify.
The Flagship Scholarship is offered to admitted first-time first-year students who graduate from one of the designated Flagship high schools. Combined with the HOPE scholarship, it covers a student’s tuition and mandatory fees for up to eight semesters, which adds up to as much as $52,000 over four years. To be considered for 2021–22 acceptance, students must apply to UT by December 15, 2020, and complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2021.
“As the state’s flagship land-grant university, we take our responsibility to be a leader for our state seriously, and to us that means serving all Tennesseans,” said Chancellor Donde Plowman. “I know firsthand the difference an education can make, and by expanding this scholarship program, we’re creating more opportunities for Tennessee students to achieve great things.”
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director for Undergraduate Admissions Fabrizio D’Aloisio agrees, adding that this expansion upholds the university’s duty of providing higher education opportunities to additional families across Tennessee.
“We want to show these students that we are willing and ready to invest in them and their futures,” D’Aloisio said. “Their future is Tennessee’s future.”
Another part of the expansion includes an application fee waiver for Flagship students applying for admission to UT.
Brakala Sims, a UT student studying kinesiology, attended Tyner Academy in Chattanooga and is a Flagship recipient. “Being a Flagship scholar, to me, means I have determination,” Sims said. “Without this scholarship, I would not be able to proceed to higher education. I wouldn’t be here without this scholarship, and because of this scholarship, I will give my all to Tennessee.”
The Flagship Scholarship program was created in 2005 and is part of the university’s larger Tri-Star Scholarship program. More information about the Flagship Scholarship, including a full list of eligible schools, is available at tiny.utk.edu/flagship.
New schools with students receiving the Flagship Scholarship are Cane Ridge High School in Antioch; Kenwood High School, Northeast High School, and West Creek High School in Clarksville; Central High School in Knoxville; and Overton High School, Southwind High School, and Whitehaven High School in Memphis.
