This Saturday is Research Day, an annual event that invites high-achieving high school juniors and seniors to UT to explore research opportunities.
During the event, co-hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Undergraduate Admissions, students and parents will tour some of the most exciting research areas on campus, meet current undergraduate students participating in research, and view posters of research projects.
Approximately 150 students have registered for the event, representing significant growth from last year’s event, attended by 92 students and their families.
“We are excited to share the variety of research experiences available to students who choose to attend UT,” said Marisa Moazen, assistant vice chancellor of research engagement and director of the Office of Undergraduate Research.
Moazen said undergraduate research participation is one of the pillars of experiential learning, an education style based on reflection and doing.
Last year, 3,906 students participated in research, which accounts for 15 percent of UT’s undergraduate population. UT holds the Carnegie Foundation Research 1 or R1 designation, granted to doctoral universities with very high research activity.
Faculty have invited the high school students and their families to visit UT’s labs, greenhouses, stages, and classrooms to learn firsthand about research conducted in their departments and the experiential learning activities happening across disciplines.
“As they tour facilities and speak with faculty and current undergraduate researchers, attendees gain a better understanding of what research looks like across disciplines and are exposed to fields they otherwise would not have known about or had an interest in,” said Moazen.
She and Thomas Broadhead, director of academic undergraduate advancement, will speak to the group and share information and opportunities for incoming students.
