Thousands of students are returning to Rocky Top this week to move in to campus residence halls for the fall semester.

Around 7,500 residential students are moving to campus this week.

Residence halls began welcoming residents Sunday, when students arrived for band camp and students who were on campus for summer activities moved in to their fall housing. Ignite Serves program participants arrived Monday. Female students participating in Panhellenic sorority recruitment and upperclassmen move in Wednesday. Male students participating in Interfraternity Council recruitment and Ignite Summit participants move in Thursday. Members of 19 living and learning communities will move in Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Move-in day for all other students begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, August 18. Classes start Wednesday, August 22.

Hundreds of volunteers from the campus and community will be on hand Saturday to welcome new Vols to campus and help unload vehicles. University staff will be stationed at various spots around campus to answer questions and assist arriving students and their families.

Welcome Week activities begin Sunday, August 19. New and returning students can enjoy events throughout the week. Welcome Week gives students a chance to settle in to life on Rocky Top and make connections with other students, faculty, and staff.

Students will share in university traditions, including Torch Night and Rocky Top Rally, both of which will happen on Monday, August 20. In previous years, these events took place on Sunday.

An annual tradition since 1925, Torch Night will formally welcome all new students to the Volunteer community. Upperclassmen will symbolically pass the Torch of Preparation to first-year students. The event begins at 7 p.m. in Neyland Stadium. Rocky Top Rally will begin following Torch Night in the stadium.

Other Welcome Week events include The Local Concert Series, a Student Engagement Fair, and Vol Night Long.
