November marked the one-year anniversary of the Gatlinburg wildfires that destroyed scores of properties and claimed more than a dozen lives. The Knoxville News Sentinel interviewed Henri Grissino-Mayer, a professor of geography, as part of its story package that examined the impact of the wildfires.

Grissino-Mayer, who studies tree rings to predict wildfires, warned of a wildfire for years. He warns the fire will come again.

“No one listens,” Grissino-Mayer told the newspaper. “That’s what nature does. Nature burns.”
