Marianne Wanamaker, associate professor of economics in the Haslam College of Business, has been appointed as a senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. The first active UT professor to serve the council, she moved to Washington, DC this summer to begin a one-year term.
Established by Congress in 1946, the Council of Economic Advisers is composed of three Members appointed by the president and supported by senior economists such as Wanamaker. Its stated mission is to “formulate and recommend national economic policy to promote employment, production, and purchasing power under free competitive enterprise.”
Wanamaker—an expert on American economic history, education and demography, and labor economics—will advise the council on labor and education economics questions.
“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to simultaneously serve my country and do the work that I love,” said Wanamaker. “The council has supported evidence-based policymaking for more than 70 years, and I feel fortunate to be joining this group at a time when economic evidence is so highly relevant.”
Stephen Mangum, dean of the college and the Stokely Foundation Leadership Chair, said Wanamaker is a uniquely qualified scholar and teacher.
“Dr. Wanamaker is extraordinarily gifted and deserving of this significant honor,” he said. “She is intellectually curious, asks important research questions, has strong methodological skills, and is driven by questions of policy relevance. We are pleased that she has been selected for this significant policy position.”
Wanamaker also is a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At UT, she is a Kinney Family Faculty Fellow, a Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research Fellow, and a BB&T Scholar in Markets, Capitalism, and Ethics.
