UT’s Ice Vols hockey team will play the University of Richmond Spiders hockey team in a charity game to honor Berke Bates.

Bates was a Virginia State trooper killed in a helicopter crash while monitoring the protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Sunday, August 13.

The game begins at 8 p.m. Friday, September 15, at the Richmond Ice Zone in Richmond, Virginia.

Bates attended UT in the late 1990s and played hockey for the Ice Vols. He also served as a volunteer youth hockey coach while living in Richmond.

Jake McKamey, a senior studying recreation and sport management and president of the Ice Vols hockey team, said the teams decided to join forces to help the Bates family.

“We thought it would be a great idea to play this charity game in front of many of the kids that he coached,” said McKamey.

Tickets will be $5 at the door for the general public and free for students. All ticket sales will be donated to a fund established for the Bates family.

Those who wish to make contributions can donate to the Trooper Berke Bates Charity Game GoFundMe account.
