Thirty-eight students who had been academically dismissed at the end of the spring semester are now back in class, thanks to the Summer Opportunity for Academic Recovery (SOAR).

Selected students are invited to attend this second-chance program. They are allowed to remain at UT if they successfully complete the program’s requirements, which include taking at least 7 hours of summer classes, including a 1-hour course on success strategies; meeting weekly with an academic coach; and spending at least 10 hours a week outside of class in structured study or tutoring.

Forty of the 48 students who completed SOAR this summer were eligible to return this fall. Seventeen of them returned to good standing, 21 are continuing on probation, and two opted not to return this fall.

“Thanks to SOAR, these students have improved their study strategies and learned about campus resources that can help them succeed in completing their degrees,” said Brennen Salmon of UT’s Student Success Center, who directed the SOAR program.
