National National Geographic spoke with UT’s Daniel Simberloff about how a 150-year-old effort to restore remote Ascension Island in the Atlantic may help humans add trees to Mars and possibly save Earth.

Simberloff, Gore Hunger Professor of Environmental Studies and one of the world’s leading experts on invasive species, says that studying Ascension Island could help us learn not just about Mars, but also how to green Earth’s deserts and feed more people. He added that more research is needed on novel ecosystems.
