The Center for Health Education and Wellness is partnering with the College of Nursing, the Knox County Health Department, and UT Medical Center to present the award-winning documentary Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic at 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, in Alumni Memorial Building Room 32.

This free event provides students, staff, and faculty the opportunity to learn more about human papillomavirus, which infects approximately 14 million people annually.

The film follows the lives of five women affected by HPV, the virus that is responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer. HPV continues to be a misunderstood virus, with many individuals unaware of the risks, the vaccine, or the other cancers HPV can cause.

There is no way to tell if an HPV infection can result in cancer, which is one of the reasons why the HPV vaccine is highly recommended.

An HPV vaccine clinic for UT students will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on February 21 and 22 at the Wesley Foundation. Students should bring a photo ID. No appointment is necessary. Health insurance is not required to participate. Most people qualify for the patience assistance program that is available to cover the cost of the vaccine. Eligibility for the program will be determined before the vaccine is administered.
