The musical styles and colors of Brazil will be featured during the spring installment of UT’s Ready for the World Music Series on Sunday, February 12.
The Ready for the World Music Series: Brazilian Colors will feature an artistic and cultural artifact exhibit and reception at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center. The musical performance begins at 2 p.m. in the Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall. All events are free and open to the public.
During this program, the audience will enjoy the music of Brazil presented by a guest duo, violinist Paula Bujes and cellist Pedro Huff. Bujes and Huff are faculty members at the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. Together they explore new works for violin and cello featuring a wide variety of Brazilian rhythmic genres, especially music from northeastern and douthern Brazil.
Joining the duo will be Bernardo Scarambone, a piano professor at Eastern Kentucky University. Scarambone holds 13 prizes in national and international competitions and has been performing and researching Brazilian music for more than 16 years.
The Ready for the World Music Series brings renowned artists to campus to perform and talk about musical styles and literature from diverse regions around the world. Each program is designed to demonstrate the rich musical influences a region has had on the traditions of Western classical music.
The lineup of exhibitors this year includes Rosalina Tipton, a local Brazilian artist; Wanessa Velloso, a senior lecturer of Portuguese at UT; Jussara Horton, a local educator from Brazil and parent of a UT student; and Raven Bailey, president of UT’s Portuguese Language Club. UT Libraries, HoLa Hora Latina, and the Portuguese Language Club will also host exhibits.
The Ready for the World Music Series is made possible by the Haines-Morris Endowment, UT’s College of Arts and Sciences, UT’s School of Music, UT’s Office of Multicultural Student Life, UT Libraries, HoLa Hora Latina, and the UT Confucius Institute.
