The McClung Museum will host its sixth annual Civil War Lecture Series starting on January 29.
This year’s lecture series will again examine Civil War history, especially as it pertains to Knoxville. The lectures, given by McClung Museum Civil War Curator Joan Markel, will explore larger Civil War themes from the Knoxville perspective.
“Seeing the war through the eyes of the local community who experienced it 150-plus years ago, gives those of us who now call Knoxville home a sense of longevity and endurance,” said Markel. “Our community today, newcomers and descendants included, was significantly shaped by what happened in the past.”
The series kicks off at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 29, with “It Happened in East Tennessee: Longstreet’s Plunge into Independent Command 1863–64,” which will look at the major deployment of the First Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, from a Virginia summer to an East Tennessee winter and the many strategic, tactical, and personnel issues that intervened.
Each monthly presentation takes place at 2 p.m. on Sundays in the McClung Museum auditorium. All lectures are free and open to the public.

- March 26—“On the Ground in 2017: Visiting East Tennessee’s Civil War Geography and History”
- April 24—“Every Man and the Civil War in East Tennessee: Retrieving the Legacies of Local Heroes”
The McClung Museum is at 1327 Circle Park Drive. Museum admission is free, and the museum’s hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1–5 p.m. on Sundays. Free two-hour museum parking passes are available from the parking kiosk at the entrance to Circle Park Drive during the week. Free parking is available on the weekends. Free public transportation to the museum is available via the Knoxville Trolley Vol Line.
