The Knoxville News Sentinel recently featured Benny Smith, the general manager and program director of WUTK, UT’s radio station.
Even though Smith isn’t a student, he’s just as dedicated to the station’s success. Indeed, his job titles tell only part of the story. He oversees and instructs over 200 students and helps make major decisions about the playlist, mentoring those budding broadcasters in the process.
I give them the benefit of my experience,” Smith said. “I explain the reality of radio. I try to reinforce whatever decision they make about their careers, and though it’s ultimately their decision as to what direction they want to go, I’m here to support them.”
Smith has been with the station for 12 years.
