UT’s McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture has launched a new online collections search tool as part of its newly redesigned website.
The online search capability was launched with 1,270 objects from featured collections, including the museum’s map collection, Roman objects, art works on paper, and selected historic photographs. Staff will gradually add additional items from the more than 28,000 objects in the museum’s arts and culture collections. Other collections slated for digitization in the upcoming months include more historic photography, Northwest coast Native American material culture, and Tang Dynasty Chinese ceramics.
Having access to collections online will have a strong impact on research and teaching at the museum as professors, outside researchers, and students will be able to complete their own searches of the museum’s collections to guide and inspire their work. By putting the arts and culture collections online, the museum hopes that researchers and the public might help add details and data to the collections.
Professors interested in teaching with the McClung Museum’s collections are encouraged to contact the museum’s Academic Programs Department on the museum’s website. Professors or students interested in conducting research using the museum’s collections should fill out the museum’s research request form.
The McClung Museum is located at 1327 Circle Park Drive. Museum admission is free, and the museum’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Groups may schedule tours by calling 865-974-2144 or emailing museum@utk.edu. Free two-hour museum parking passes are available from the parking information building at the entrance to Circle Park Drive on weekdays by request. Free parking is available on Circle Park Drive on a first-come, first-served basis on weekends. Free public transportation to the museum is also available via the Knoxville Trolley Vol Line.
