The UT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory Joint Institute for Advanced Materials has named Veerle Keppens as its new director.
UT Knoxville is a much better university than it was seven years ago when Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek arrived. He has initiated and overseen a lengthy list of improvements—some visible on our campus landscape and others woven into the fabric of our university.
John Keny worked with Chancellor Cheek as both an undergraduate, as the chief of staff for Student Government Association, and graduate student, as the Graduate Student Senate president. In a personal letter, Keny says he will always be thankful for the opportunities he had to work closely with Cheek.

Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek announced Tuesday, June 21, that he will step down as chancellor and transition to a faculty position teaching higher education leadership sometime in the next academic year. President Joe DiPietro will begin the search for a new chancellor immediately with the goal of filling the job by spring semester 2017.
