A section of Volunteer Boulevard between UT Drive and Pat Head Summitt Street will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic this summer for the first phase of a new project to remake the street into a more pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare.

Closures of the street and sidewalks will begin the morning of Sunday, May 29. All sidewalks and traffic lanes will reopen by Friday, Aug. 12.

Roads near the project can be used as detours including Andy Holt Avenue, UT Drive, Todd Helton Drive, Chamique Holdsclaw Drive and Pat Head Summitt Street.

Work on the project will take place during the next three summers. Improvements will include the installation of benches, tables and chairs, the addition of pedestrian-friendly street lighting, removal of on-street parking, and widened curbside lanes.

Special landscaping along the street will help purify stormwater runoff, and mid-block crosswalks will be raised slightly above street level to assist with traffic calming.
