The German Studies program is hosting a two-day event to explore the work of one of New German Cinema’s greatest figures, Werner Herzog, on April 12 and 14.
The event consists of a screening of Herzog’s documentary Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a Tale of Life, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in the Lindsay Young Auditorium in Hodges Library. Faye Stewart will present a lecture titled “Into Herzog’s Abyss: A Transatlantic Perspective on the Death Penalty” at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, in Hodges Library Room 235.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Stewart is an associate professor of German in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Georgia State University in Atlanta. She is also affiliated with the Institute for Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies as well as the Center for Human Rights and Democracy.
Herzog’s 2011 documentary makes a provocative statement on the ongoing transnational debates about capital punishment. Like his other recent documentary work, “Into the Abyss” conveys an overt critique of contemporary American society. Stewart will discuss the film’s depiction of capital punishment as unjust and inhumane.
Attendees are invited to a reception following Thursday’s lecture.
