As spring gets under way, it’s time to consider summer plans for kids. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has many educational, active and interesting camps to offer. All camps are on the UT campus unless otherwise noted. Some camp offerings are listed below:

4-H CAMPS

Tennessee 4-H offers a variety of camps at various sites around the state. Camps are geared to specific age groups and to youth with special interests.  For more information about 4-H camps, contact your County Extension Office or visit the Tennessee 4-H website.

4-H Electric Camp
Dates: June 28–July 1
Grades: 6–7
Location: University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Cost: $265
This fee includes housing, meals, admission to Dollywood, and recreational activities. Transportation fees are covered by members of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Design Matters Camp
Dates: July 10–15
Grades: High school students through age 17
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Cost: $985 (until April 15); $1,085 (after April 15)

A summer camp for high school students, Design Matters offers motivated high school students an introduction to the design of the built environment and the considerations that shape it. This week-long immersion allows participants to experience life as a design student on a university campus through its setting, curriculum, and instruction. Previous architecture or design experience is not necessary. Visit the College of Architecture and Design for more information.

MCCLUNG MUSEUM CAMPS

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture has various camps for pre-K through sixth graders focused on fine art, archaeology, and ancient cultures. For more information, visit the website or contact Debbie Woodiel, woodield@utk.edu, or 865-974-2144.

Archaeokids: Exploring Ancient Art and Archaelogy
Dates: July 11–15
Time: 1:00–4:00 p.m.
Grades: 4–6
Location: McClung Museum
Cost: $110 per child; $99 per child for museum members

Campers will discover the art and culture of ancient peoples through authentic artifacts and art activities about ancient Egyptians, ancient Native Americans, Romans, and other ancient peoples. “Ancient” snacks included. Deadline for registration is July 1.

Dig It! Fun with Fossils
Dates: June 20–24
Times: 1:00–4:00 p.m.
Grades: 4–6
Location: McClung Museum
Cost: $110 per child; $99 per child for museum members

Dinosaurs, mosasaurs, mastodons, and other extinct animals are presented through real fossils, hands-on activities, excavation, and food. “Rocks” and other fun snacks are included. Deadline for registration is June 13.

Dino Explorers
Dates: June 7–9
Times: 9:00–11:00 a.m.
Ages: 4–5, campers only
Location: McClung Museum
Cost: $35 per child, $5 discount for museum members

This camp explores scientific inquiry thorough activities, stories, and make-and-take projects based on our new exhibition. Deadline for registration is May 31.

Jurassic Kids Camp
Dates: June 14–15
Times: 9:00–11:00 a.m.
Ages: 2–3, with caregiver
Location: McClung Museum Cost: $25 per child (caregiver free); $5 discount for museum members

Activities for toddlers and caregivers are inspired by our new summer exhibition, Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas. Deadline for registration is June 7.

Little Artists Camp
Dates: July 13–14

Ages: 2–3, with caregiver

Enriched circle time with stories and songs, guided activities, and take-home projects inspired by our decorative arts collection. Deadline for registration is July 6.

Little Masters Camp
Dates: June 21–23

Art projects to take home, stories, and guided activities are inspired by the works in our exhibition of decorative arts. Deadline for registration is June 14.

CLARENCE BROWN THEATRE SUMMER ACTING WORKSHOP

Session 1: June 20–July 1
Session 2: July 18–29
Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Grades: 9–college freshman
Location: Clarence Brown Theatre
Cost: $525

Participants will have classes in acting technique, voice and movement, improvisation and musical theater. No prior experience is necessary, and each session will culminate in a public showcase of the students’ work. Twenty participants will be accepted in each session on a first come, first served basis. ADVENTURES IN STEM GIRLS CAMP

Dates: June 27–July 1
Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Friday
Grades: 7–8
Location: Min H. Kao Building

Cost: $125

Students will be immersed in a week full of hands-on activities, lab visits, and team projects in UT labs and classrooms that expose the exciting challenges of being a scientist or researcher. Overall, the week will be geared toward students who are interested in expanding their knowledge of engineering, math, and biology. For more information or to register, visit the camp’s website.

KIDS U CAMPS

Kids U summer camps, most offered on the UT campus or at the UT Conference Center in downtown Knoxville, provide a wide range of opportunities for area youth in grades 3–12. Children learn from college faculty, staff, and graduate students in fields such as art, chemistry, cooking, anthropology, photography, microbiology, computers, and veterinary medicine.
