Leadership in Nonprofits and Social Entrepreneurship (ENT 410 and MGT 510) is a service-learning class focused on teaching students how to manage charities, foundations, associations, and other nonprofits. But this fall it will take on the Learning by Giving Foundation’s model, giving students the responsibility of distributing $30,000 in grants.

Students will receive competitive grant proposals from area nonprofits and spend the semester reviewing them, interviewing administrators, and determining the best investment for efficient use and impact of the funds. Jim Haslam, Jim Clayton and the Learning by Giving Foundation each donated $10,000 toward the grant funds.

The course will also feature a series of case studies on real nonprofits, placing students in a situation that actually occurred, with the expectation of finding real-world solutions. Nonprofit leaders and philanthropists will also attend class as guest speakers.
