Twenty students from the School of Communication Studies are in Washington, DC, for five days to visit government agencies and network with UT alumni in the area.
The purpose of the trip is to expand students’ knowledge on internship and job opportunities in the nation’s capital. It also allows participants to establish lifelong networking relationships with the people they meet during the trip.
In the past, students have met with alumni and other professionals from the Smithsonian Institution, FBI Headquarters, GEP (Global Event Partners), Toyota Government Relations, and the Chinese Embassy. This year, the itinerary includes meetings at the Newseum, the US Capitol, the Woodrow Wilson Center (a nonpartisan policy center), the FBI Academy at Quantico, Microsoft’s Government Relations office, and the Australian Embassy. The students will return to Knoxville on Wednesday.
In addition to networking with alumni, students will meet US Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN) of Tennessee’s First Congressional District, which includes the eastern part of the state.
The annual trip is organized by School of Communications Studies Director John Haas and Lecturer Dean Rice. Both accompanied the students on the trip.
Haas says the trip has a significant impact on students’ career aspirations and continues to prove beneficial for students year after year.
